‘On-site use of Airguns’ | 27/12/2025
Dear Neighbour / whom it may concern, this is a courtesy notification to let you know that some Residents of our Site are learning to use ‘Air Guns’ (pistol and rifle) – termed as ‘Air Weapons’ by the Government – for target practice within the Site’s grounds. This activity is part of their cadet and club training, as well as their regular hobby.
The Site Administrator wished to proactively assure you that such activity within the Site’s boundary will be managed safely within the statutory guidelines. It should be noted ‘Air Guns’ may be classed as firearms in the UK and as such are subject to strict laws and regulations – which you can learn about here: www.gov.uk/government/publications/air-weapons-a-brief-guide-to-safety-jan-2011
Private target practicing (i.e. plinking) can sometimes raise concern from neighbours unaware of the type of shooting activity nearby. The Site Administrator wishes to transparently describe the safe shooting environment and shooting practice arrangements in place at the Site. The below should answer any pertinent questions you may or may not have.
What ‘Air Guns’ do your Residents shoot?
Our Residents shoot mostly low-energy CO2 gas-propelled pistols firing .177 (4.5mm) calibre soft alloy pellets and steel or plastic ball-bearings. Occasionally, we shoot spring-powered or regulated Pre Charged Pneumatic (PCP) rifles firing .22 (5.6mm) / .25 (6.35mm) lead pellets. The Site Administrator estimates the power (muzzle energy) of the air pistols to be significantly lower than the UK legal limit of 6 foot-pounds, at about 40% of that limit, and the most power rifles, to deliver .22 calibre pellets downrange at no more than 11.5 foot-pounds, so a little below the UK legal limit for this type of firearm. In summary, only low-energy, soft and small-bore projectiles will be discharged.
Please note, a Firearms Certificate (FAC) is not required for any of our concerned ‘Air Guns’, which are purchased directly from (and registered with) reputable UK Registered Firearms Dealers (RFDs). Be assured there will be NO firing of a weapon capable of discharging any high-energy projectile (>15 Joules), Airsoft, paintball, PCP, large calibre, rim-fire, heavy-grain, or gunpowder-based live ammunitions rounds.
Should I be concerned about projectiles ‘ricocheting’ nearby?
Our Residents shoot our ‘Air Guns’ in the South West direction of 200 to 215 degrees towards our main building only, and in the opposing or contrary directions of our Site’s perimeter fencing. This means no projectiles from our ‘Air Guns’ are discharged directly towards any neighbouring fence or the public highway. As an extra precaution to prevent pellet or ball-bearing ricochets, our Residents shoot at targets with metal traps using high quality and reliable pellet-catchers manufactured by NightHawk. The Site Administrator does not anticipate any ricocheting of projectiles beyond the Site’s perimeter.
What about noise-levels and times of practice?
Most ‘Air Guns’ have very short and relatively low noise levels typically between 95 to 110 decibels, and the Site Administrator estimates noise levels at the Site to be in the middle of that range. However, such noise levels can cause nuisance if prolonged and at unsocial hours, especially to young children, the elderly and pets. Owing to the Site’s practice range has been designed with noise dampening techniques, e.g. wall concrete backstop, canvas rebound sheet around targets, rifle firing at long-range from within a tent, etc. the Site Administrator has gone beyond what is required to keep noise-levels to a minimum. Site testing suggests noise-levels from the metal pellet-catchers (plinking) may be more noticeable than the ‘Air Guns’ themselves. Typically, our Residents practice together for 1-2 hours total per target practice session about once or twice a week, mostly on weekends, with one ‘Air Gun’ at any one time and not before 10AM or after 10PM.
What firearms safeguarding and shooting experience do you have?
The ‘Air Guns’ are stored in an alarmed indoor, walled storage cupboard secured by 5-lever mortice locks with anti-drill hardened deadbolts which is constantly monitored by a vandal-proof CCTV recording. The storage cupboard is accessible by the Site Administrator only, and anyone under the age of 18 years is unable to access it. Ammunition is not stored in the same storage cupboard and is placed in a small safe vault elsewhere. All children under the age of 16 years and beginners using an ‘Air Gun’ at the Site, are constantly supervised by at least one adult. Our Site Administrator is security vetted, has owned and operated various firearms for over three decades as a member of various shooting clubs affiliated with the National Small-bore Rifle Association, is a member of the British Association for Shooting and Conservation, and has comprehensive liability insurance policy cover for recreational shooting.
Summary
The Site Administrator has taken a considered approach by respectfully notifying you (a neighbour or an interested party), to inform you about a recreational hobby at our Site, and has hopefully described and shared openly with you much of its details which we appreciate can be a concern to some people. We hope this notification addresses any queries you may or may not have, and trust you can contact the Site Administrator below should you, in the unlikely event, have a concern or complaint about this Site activity.
